The Beautiful Canoe Collective: Journey the Beautiful Canoe

A theatrical exploration of Indigenous women's experiences of pregnancy and childbirth in the context of culture, tradition, colonialism and childbirth in the context of culture, tradition, colonialism and medicalization - explores loss and becoming a mother. The Beautiful Canoe Collective is a group of four Indigenous women, Kerry Bebee (Michi-sagiig Anishnaabe), Lena Recollet (Anishnaabe), Urpi Pine (Quechua/Mi’kmaq) and Mapu Graner (Mapuche/Quechua) who have spent the past 5 years creating a mixed media play focused on our personal experiences of birth. This play was created in collaboration with dramaturge Monique Mojica (Guna/Rappahannock); director Ange Loft (Mohawk); acting coach Penny Couchie (Anishnaabe/Mohawk); movement coach Norma Araiza (Yaqui); music coach Pura Fe (Tuscarora/Taino) and uses an entirely Indigenous methodology and dramaturgy.
